Super-Crit

One on one feedback with Caroline Cample as my 'buddy' - Make your desired audience more specific. - Regarding autoethnographic process, describe what it felt like in yourself prior to the exercise, make a comparison. - Why did you choose this specific martial art? Gives details of motivation - Use the benefits you've received from the martial art as leverage - Narrow down your design statement, be simple and honest. Don't just use generic words like 'disrupt'. What do you mean by this? You're combining your interests - How does your illustration fit into this? How can you persuade using this medium? - Illustration is a very broad practice, be more specific Feedback from group critique - Gamify the AR aspect, makes people get out and walk around to collect the animations like Pokemon Go - Body image as an incentive for many, convince someone to squat while they're waiting at the bus stop - Deliberately move away from body image as a motive,...

Other campaigns that I've found that are remotely related. In terms of research, I can find plenty of exercise campaigns related to games in teens, kids and seniors but nothing on the people in between. This was the most information I could find on gamer statistics. So while the audience is slightly smaller, 18 to 35-year-olds still average at 27% of the gaming community.

Interviews

Interview with Dr. Julie Forsey (GP) Notes on audio recording: (paraphrased) Q: What are the main afflictions you would recommend exercise for? A: Most often, depression. I tailor my advice to the patient and what interests them. Things like encouraging them to skateboard or start dancing again because they used to enjoy that. Especially for people with low self-confidence or young people who've had a history of bullying. Also with people who are busy I'll advise them to do little things like just walk a little bit each, for example, try to get off the bus one stop early so they can have ten minutes of fresh air. What makes this exercise particularly beneficial is if they introduce mindfulness as well. So clearing their minds while they walk and letting go of busy thoughts. This helps reduce anxiety and helps them relax. Q: I understand you have a limited amount of time with each patient. Do you find it takes a bit of convincing to get people of exercise, also do you fi...

Designing for: The gaming community

Approach fitness like a game Apps for changing habits  Experiments with exercise apps A THOROUGH analysis of school students/game time A study showing health issues and games Statement:     I am a character designer exploring why people don’t exercise and the harm of a sedentary lifestyle in gamers.  Idea: (opinion) aim at the gaming community, this is a specific group of people who spend many consecutive hours and more time in front of a screen than the vast majority. The addictive nature of the games coupled with the escapism can leave people sucked into the virtual void, losing time and losing health. This issue doesn't get addressed as often as more detrimental addictions such as drinking or gambling but it's just as valid and often leaves people in a state of anxiety. 'I need to do certain things, get out into the real world, work, do uni work etc. but that's daunting and challenging and I'd much rather level up my character.' People who play ...

Local research

Looking at local sports and rec that are free/cheap/koha/ community-based. Also trying to find more leftwing or unusual ones that people may not have thought about before. Felag "Wellington Medieval Armoured Combat" Facebook page Blog post  Death Metal Yoga Blog post Useful stuff  from Ministry of Health for exercise guidelines.

Confusion over the relevance of AR for this project. No one's going to stop to try it so will just look like an unfinished poster. Find the right context for AR - could try looking into 'the potential of new tech for social change' - or have it in an area where people are stationery like bus/train/subway/toilet door Could also try a different kind of animation; moving poster, screen, lenticular screen - looks one way on way to work, changes on the way back. Don't look at obesity, BMI is an outdated measurement. Instead just look at sedentary lifestyles. Also don't look at just full-time workers. This is narrow, long-term unemployed are just as in need of movement. Could consider money as a factor of people not joining clubs. Look into what's local/free/cheap/koha

Casual chats and thought trains

Looking at the healing power of movement. Wanting to bring this 'holistic' view away from new age hippie yoga mums and into normalcy. Two paths I seem to be looking at - Movement to heal - The 'Inner Pulse' Is there some way to connect the two? Meeting with Mark Bradford. Find his PhD research, particularly the method section. Importance of keeping a Wing Tsun diary is consistency. Meeting with Lauren. Healing implies there's an end, possibly look at 'management'. Martial arts and dance, be specific about what you're wanting to focus on. Can be both. Find a target audience to focus research on. Possibly narrow down to a target affliction (eg RSI), though if using yourself as demographic watch for confirmation bias. Look into Karl Young, mind/body as an academic affirmation of holistic approach. Be aware of Qualitative research and quantitative research, get both (this many people suffered diabetes/how did this person feel about diabetes) Gre...
